W3C Validation and Search Engine Optimization:

The benefits of having your website validated by www.w3.org are as numerous as they are important. This document will be addressing the importance of this, the basic processes, and how it all ties in with search engine optimization.

First, it is important to establish the role of w3.org or the "World Wide Web Consortium". W3C primarily pursues its mission through the creation of Web standards and guidelines. In its first ten years, W3C published more than eighty such W3C Recommendations. W3C also engages in education and outreach, develops software, and serves as an open forum for discussion about the Web. In order for the Web to reach its full potential, the most fundamental Web technologies must be compatible with one another and allow any hardware and software used to access the Web to work together. W3C refers to this goal as "Web interoperability." By publishing open (non-proprietary) standards for Web languages and protocols, W3C seeks to avoid market fragmentation and thus Web fragmentation.

Now that we know what W3C does, I think it is important to gauge the overall effect of what this means to the web developer. I would like to use an analogy here and compare W3C to something comparable that is not computer or internet related. W3C is to the Web Developer as Webster's Dictionary is to a literary author. That is to say that when a literary author has a problem with the spelling of a word, a definition, or even a synonym, he / she knows that he / she can look up said problem in Webster's Dictionary and find the answer. Well in exactly the same way, when a web developer has a problem with anything dealing with the language used to design websites they look up the answer on W3C.

Optimization is very different from the structure of the website. The structure of the website is actually its own optimization. By having an image (like the one at the bottom of our home page) from W3C saying the structure of this page is valid, is to say the structure of the site is "perfect" as defined by the W3C. Perfect, is meaning everything is where it should be with nothing extraneous, missing, or out of order. The effect this has on optimization is profound. Web sites that are error free and then optimized are in fact optimized twice, once so they spiders can make perfect sense of the language used, and again to make sure that they then list you for the key phrases that are important to you. Also, it typically makes the reciprocal link getting process easier. If you see a W3C image at the bottom of the page, you may think to yourself, "who is this W3 gentleman", but a webmaster viewing the W3C logo at the bottom of your web page would think that this is a well structured web page put together by someone who is striving for perfect code, and therefore more likely to be a valuable resource in the future for linking purposes.

In Summation:

By having the structure of your web site clean and concise, it allows the search engine spiders to move more efficiently through your site.

It commands respect in the web community as someone who strives for perfection and therefore is more deserving of results, than someone who is less inclined to go through this arduous procedure.

It also enhances the optimization of your site by making room in the code for the key phrases that are most important to you.

These rules were created by the creator of the worldwide web (not Al Gore) check out www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/ for more information.

This process is mainly for those who are thoroughly dedicated to succeeding in their web based adventure as it is very time consuming to edit hundreds of thousands of lines of code by hand. However, as a tool combined with search engine optimization it will ensure that you hurdle past the competition that stands between you and all of the goals you may have for your internet based businesses ideal traffic volume.
